Celebrex primarily is used to relieve inflammation and pain associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Celebrex is in a new class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) known as "COX-2 inhibitors." It has also been shown to reduce inflammation and pain, just as older NSAIDs such as Naprosyn and Motrin do, by inhibiting the effect of a natural enzyme named COX-2. Celebrex, not like some older medications, does not interfere with COX-1 (a similar substance of COX-2) which is known to exert a shielding effect on the lining of the stomach. Due to this fact Celebrex is less likely to cause ulcers and bleeding that are sometimes associated with long term use of the older NSAIDs. Celebrex is also known to lower the number of colorectal polyps (growths in the wall of the lower intestine and rectum) in people that suffer from a condition known as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). FAP is an inherited tendency to develop large numbers of colorectal polyps that eventually become cancerous.
